Building Your New Budget

A clear, honest look at exactly what we do in two sessions and what you walk away with.

We start with what you have, not with what you should have.

Every budget we build starts from the same place: your actual pension amount, written down. Not estimated. Not rounded. The exact number that arrives in your account each month.

From there, we work through every category of spending together. We do not hand you a form to fill in alone. We sit alongside you and work through it. Some categories are obvious. Others take some thinking. Some expenses you had forgotten about entirely.

The goal of the first session is a complete picture. Not a plan yet. Just an honest, complete picture of your financial life as it currently is. That picture alone is often clarifying in ways people do not expect.

Step by step through the two sessions

1

Document your income

We write down every source of income. Your main pension. Any supplementary pension. Any additional income from part-time work or rental. We work with what actually exists, not with what might exist.

2

Identify fixed monthly costs

These are the costs that do not change: rent or housing costs, phone, internet, any loan repayments, regular subscriptions. We list them, total them, and subtract them from your income. What remains is what you actually have to work with.

3

Map variable costs honestly

Food, transport, clothing, personal care, small social expenses. These vary month to month. We look at what you actually spend, not what you think you should spend. Honesty here is what makes the budget work.

4

Plan for medications and health costs

Prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, dental visits, glasses. These costs are real and they tend to grow over time. We plan for them explicitly rather than hoping they fit into whatever is left over.

5

Handle seasonal and irregular costs

Winter heating bills. Summer electricity for cooling. Annual insurance payments. Birthday gifts. These costs are predictable even if they are not monthly. We spread them across the year so no single month is a crisis.

6

Build a small buffer

Even a modest buffer changes how a tight month feels. We look at whether a small regular amount can be set aside, and how to do that practically given your specific income level. No illusions. Just what is actually possible.

Every category we work through together

These are the eight main areas we address in every budget we build.

Housing
Rent, utilities, maintenance. The largest fixed cost for most retirees.
Food
Groceries, market shopping, occasional meals out. Real amounts, not ideal ones.
Health
Medications, doctor visits, dental, optical. Planned for, not hoped for.
Transport
Public transport, occasional taxi, car costs if applicable.
Clothing
Seasonal purchases, footwear, basic replacement items.
Communications
Phone, internet, TV subscriptions. Fixed costs that often go unnoticed.
Social and gifts
Birthdays, holidays, small social occasions. A real part of life, planned for honestly.
Buffer
A small monthly amount set aside for irregular costs and unexpected needs.

A document. Your document.

At the end of session two, you leave with a printed budget document. It has your name on it. Your income. Your categories. Your amounts. It is not a template we fill in for you. It is something we build together.

The document is designed to be simple enough to actually use. No spreadsheet required. No app. A clear, readable monthly plan that tells you at a glance how much you have for each category and how much of the month remains.

We also walk through how to use it. How to track as you go. What to do when something unexpected comes up. How to adjust when costs change. The document is the starting point, not the end point.
